A little reading is all the therapy a person needs sometimes- this famous saying is true to a large extent. But the mode of this ‘therapy’ in today’s day seems to be throwing us into a clash of Titans- Paperback or Kindle? It’s sort of an existential crisis in a reader’s mind -Can you be a bookworm without real pages? Can you be smart without going digital?!
Paperbacks introduced us to reading and made some of us the loyalists. However, the modern-day wonder book -Kindle, has charmed many loyalists to cross over to its side. If paperbacks have a value of nostalgia and personal touch, Kindle offers to carry hundreds of books without adding on any extra weight to your bag! So the world of reading is split between:
a. ‘Paperback only’ Reader
b. Smart ‘Kindle’ Reader
C. ‘I don’t know; I love both’ reader
Let’s look at how the worthy opponents fair against each other.
|USP||High on touch & feel||Slim & portable|
|Health benefit||Helps in digital detox||Increased screen time|
|Convenience||Doesn’t offer inbuilt dictionary||Meanings, translations, markups available|
|Green points||Uses paper and ink to print||Eco friendly- saves paper & no harmful ink|
|Value||Personal belonging, memory attached, great for sharing, can be a conversation starter with a stranger||Easy accessibility, fonts can be adjusted(especially for visually challenged), doesn’t intimidate readers with page length .|
It isn’t black or white to make a decision when it comes to choosing between traditional paperback reading and digital/e-reading. Kindle may be easy to carry around and store multiple genres without any extra space. But good old books offer that personal space and take you down memory lane when you find a pressed flower or strip of paper with your favour perfume or a pretty bookmark gifted by someone. So choose what resonates with you, slow down, take a deep breath and escape into the imaginary world of words.
So who are you? Kindle lover? Lover of old but gold paperbacks? Or a fence sitter?
