Sapiens – A brief History of Mankind

Author: Yuval Noah Harari

Genre: Non- Fiction

Page count: 443

Publishing Year: 2015

Why are we the only species that rule the world? What transpired such an evolution? Where do we go from here? Are these some of the questions that keep haunting you? Then ‘Sapiens’ may help you find pathways to answers!

Sapiens, as the title suggests is a story of our mankind’s evolution- starting from our earliest ancestors to today’s world of artificial intelligence. The fact that how we were not the only humans on the planet, but still dominated all others and continue to do so till date, forms the crux of the book.  The author throws light on cognitive, linguistic, agricultural and scientific revolution to substantiate his theories, bringing about a confluence of Natural sciences with that of Social sciences.

Yuval Harari puts forth the idea that Homo sapiens dominated the rest due to their power of imagination, which enabled them to cooperate with each other on the lines of similar belief systems.

Sapiens was received positively by the general readers but scholars and scientists alike have been critical of his claims and substantiations in the book.
