Rise of the trend of eating out and online food ordering by Indian households

by The Blend

Dining out or ordering food online is becoming the norm for Indian households. There doesn’t have to be any special occasion—just a strong enough craving for non-home cooked food!

A 2021 survey by the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) shows consumers are eating out nearly seven times a month. Dining out happens to be the most popular choice followed by take-aways and home deliveries. Delhi has been fondly dubbed ‘The Dining Capital of India’ for the third time in a row this year with Bengaluru coming in a close second!

Over 80% of the respondents said they would prefer affordable casual dining options and fast service restaurants to eat out while cafes, desserts, and ice-cream parlors are the most frequented. North Indian food like Butter Chicken, Dal Makhni, and Naan lead the way at 38%, Chinese at 18%, and Continental at 16%.

In a post-pandemic world and more frequently during the pandemic, 61% of Indians prefer takeaway or home-delivery of meals—Economix Consulting Group (ECG) Survey. The age group of 25-34 order food from food delivery apps, several times a day. Social distancing norms make it difficult to dine out as frequently as before, which is why there has been a major increase in ordering food online.
