Recent studies show India’s online food industry is set to become an $8 billion market by 2022—a massive upward trend, indeed!
Here’s a rundown of the most significant trends shaping the Food Tech industry in 2022:
1. Affordability – According to the UN´s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), global food prices increased 28.1% in 2021 versus 2020. Food has become expensive to grow, manufacture, and ship. At the same, consumers are wary of spending more and are prioritizing pocket-friendly eating options this year over all else.
2. Zero Food Waste – One good thing to come out of increasing food prices? Added pressure on businesses to minimize their food waste. Shifting to recycling/upcycling all kinds of food waste to whip up a new dish is one way to ensure nothing goes to waste. Companies are also using fruit and vegetable peels to manufacture a thin film that can be used to wrap food as an alternative to plastic wrap.
3. Sustainable Food Production – Another statistic from the same UN report stated 31% of human-caused GHG emissions originate from the world’s agri-food systems. We have to switch to sustainable food production systems if we want to want to feed the next generation. Alternative proteins that are plant-based can be developed with innovative food tech.
